Dear Friends, This week, I hosted a seminar in Limerick for nonprofit organizations from Berks and Montgomery Counties to share information about state resources and grant opportunities. We welcomed representatives from more than 130 organizations—ranging from EMS and historic preservation groups to those focused on domestic violence support and food assistance—for in-depth conversations about available funding and how to successfully apply. Each year, my office assists many local organizations through the grant process. If you have questions or need guidance, please don’t hesitate to reach out—we’re here to help! Sincerely, In this Update:
Discussing the Future of AI with Politics PAI recently had the opportunity to sit down with Steve Ulrich from Politics PA to talk about one of the most pressing issues of our time—artificial intelligence. As Chair of the Senate Communications & Technology Committee, I’m committed to making sure Pennsylvania is not only keeping up with technological advancements but staying ahead of the curve. AI is already changing the way we live and work, and it’s critical that we have policies in place to protect Pennsylvanians while also encouraging innovation and economic growth. In our conversation, we covered how the Commonwealth can navigate this rapidly evolving digital world—from data privacy to workforce development to the ethical use of AI in both the public and private sectors. These conversations are just the beginning. I’ll continue working to ensure Pennsylvania leads the way in developing smart, responsible AI policy that puts people first. Connecting Local Nonprofits with State ResourcesI was proud to welcome more than 130 nonprofit leaders from Berks and Montgomery counties to our State Grants Seminar in Limerick, hosted in partnership with the TriCounty Community Network (TCN). Nonprofits are truly the heart of our communities. They provide critical services, uplift our neighbors, and make a lasting impact across the region. This event was designed to connect them with the funding opportunities and resources they need to continue their important work. A big thank you to TCN, our dedicated funding specialist, and everyone who helped make this seminar a success. Events like these are a vital part of ensuring our local organizations can thrive and grow! Full release here. Welcoming Daniel Boone Area High School Students to the CapitolWe had the pleasure of hosting 11th grade students from Daniel Boone Area High School for a walk-in visit at the Capitol. A big thank you to Matt, my Legislative Director, for taking the time to speak with the group and answer their thoughtful questions. It’s always a rewarding experience to engage with young minds and give them a closer look at how state government works. Visits like these remind us how important it is to inspire the next generation of leaders—and I’m always glad to be a part of that process. Visit with Scouting America Troop 367I recently had the honor of spending time with the remarkable young men and women of Scouting America Troop 367 in New Hanover. With nearly 40 dedicated scouts in their unit, this troop is filled with future leaders who are learning firsthand what it means to serve their communities and understand the responsibilities of citizenship. As part of their journey toward earning the First Class Rank, the scouts invited me to speak with them about our constitutional rights and the civic duties we all share as American citizens. It was a fantastic discussion, and I was truly impressed by their engagement, curiosity, and thoughtful questions. A big thank you to Assistant Scoutmaster Mary Glenn and all the dedicated leaders who give their time to support and guide these scouts. Troop 367, keep up the great work! Women Veterans Ceremony – June 10I am proud to announce that I’ll be hosting my third annual Women Veterans Ceremony at the Capitol on June 10, 2025. This event, which began following the passage of my 2022 legislation designating June 12 as Women Veterans Day in Pennsylvania, is dedicated to honoring the service of women veterans across our great Commonwealth. I truly believe that the contributions of women in the military deserve the recognition they’ve earned, and I’m thrilled to provide a platform where we can celebrate the incredible women who have served our country. I hope all women veterans from every branch of the military will join us for this special tribute. The Women Veterans Ceremony has grown year after year, and this time, we’re offering a digital display at the Capitol so that an even larger audience can experience and celebrate the stories of these remarkable women. The display will also be available online, and will go live on June 9, 2025, at www.senatorpennycuick.com. If you were featured in last year’s display, you can easily update your submission form here. For new participants, I encourage you to share your service story by completing the required submission form. The deadline for entries is May 9, 2025. This event is a chance to honor the extraordinary contributions of women throughout our history, and I can’t wait to continue recognizing their exceptional service and unwavering dedication. I look forward to seeing you there! Support The Open Link’s Wish ListThe Open Link continues to serve our community with vital services — from their food pantry to senior outreach. Students: Apply Now for Grow PA Scholarships and Improve Access for EveryonePeople across the state have felt the pain of industries with declining workforces, from the long waits to see a doctor or a skilled mechanic. Senate Republicans took action to address those issues – and to reduce the loss of talent as young adults begin their careers in other states, rarely to return to Pennsylvania. As part of this year’s state budget, the Grow PA Scholarship Grant Program offers grants of up to $5,000 per year for in-state students who pursue a degree or certification for an in-demand occupation. Qualifying courses of study include agriculture, computer science, business, education, special education, STEM education, engineering, nursing, allied health, criminal justice and other programs approved by the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency. Because the funding is being awarded on a first-come, first-served basis, it’s important to apply as soon as possible. To qualify for the grant, applicants must agree to live and work in Pennsylvania in that occupation after graduation for 12 months for each year they receive the grant. Failure to meet this requirement will result in the grant converting to a loan requiring repayment. Learn more or apply here. Survey: How Did PennDOT Do This Winter? The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is offering a short survey so motorists can offer their feedback on the winter services PennDOT provided. Filling out the survey allows you to share your thoughts about where you get information about road conditions, how soon you can expect roads to be safe to travel following a winter storm event and what features you would find useful from 511PA.com. There is also an opportunity to share additional comments. The survey can be completed anonymously. How to Locate Lost Military DocumentsA veteran’s DD214 is a vital document when it comes to receiving the benefits they deserve. It provides the member and the branch of service with a concise record of a period of time with the armed forces at the time of the member’s separation, discharge or change in military status. Veterans discharged from 2010 and after can access their own digital records by setting up an account through the VA e-Benefits portal. Veterans who were discharged before then may complete the Standard Form 180, which includes mailing instructions on the last page. They may also visit the National Archives and Records Administration site to submit a signed form electronically. Anyone who needs assistance is encouraged to call 1-800-547-2838, email RA-REQ@pg.gov or learn more online. April 26 is Celebrate Trails DayIncluding trails in state parks, trails in state forests and rail trails – former railway lines that were converted to paths for foot and bicycle traffic – Pennsylvania has thousands of miles of trails to enjoy. Trail lengths and difficulties vary. Some trails are scenic or leisurely, while others are self-guiding educational. Still others offer rigorous exercise. No matter the trail you choose, enjoy it safely by planning the route for your trip as cell phones and GPS units may not work in some areas. Bring a friend, monitor the weather and stay on the trail. It’s also important to share your route and the time you expect to return with someone who will not be on the trail with you.
