Dear Friends,

This Veterans Day let’s pause to honor the countless heroes who have selflessly served our nation. Their courage and dedication have shaped our world. As President Ronald Reagan wisely said, “Some people live an entire lifetime and wonder if they have ever made a difference in the world. A veteran doesn’t have that problem.” Let’s show our appreciation by thanking a veteran on November 11th.

Sincerely,

In this Update:

New Law Makes Workers’ Comp More Efficient

I’m pleased to report that legislation I sponsored to make the Workers’ Compensation system more efficient by moving more benefit payments from paper checks to direct deposit was recently signed into law. Act 126 of 2024 moves more benefit payments from paper checks to direct deposit. Individuals entitled to compensation may request funds be deposited into an account of their choosing. The law also allows insurers to no longer have to offer paper checks as a payment as long as the individual has a bank account that accepts direct deposit.

The reforms, which are also more cost-effective, were unanimously recommended by the Workers’ Compensation Advisory Council.

$1M Grant Secured for Schwenksville

Rep. Matt Bradford and I are happy to have secured over $1 million in grant funding for Schwenksville Borough. This bipartisan effort underscores our dedication to improving the lives of all Pennsylvanians. This investment will have a positive impact on the lives of local residents, and we look forward to continuing our work together to improve our communities.

2024 Red Ribbon Week

It was a pleasure to be part of the “Plant the Promise” project with Project LIVE Upper Perk and the Rotary Club of Upper Perk. Together, 1,000 red tulips have been planted to symbolize our commitment to a healthy and drug-free Upper Perk Valley. Thank you to everyone who participated in Red Ribbon Week 2024 (October 23-31)!

Wonderspring Early Education Visit

I had a fantastic time visiting Wonderspring Early Education in Pottstown, a star-rated 4 childcare center, where I got the opportunity to enjoy story time with their Pre-K Counts students. This amazing childcare center provides high-quality care and education for children aged 6 weeks to 12 years. It is evident that their dedicated staff creates a warm and supportive environment where young minds can thrive. Thank you having me!

Peter Becker Visit

Recently, I had the pleasure of visiting Peter Becker Community. It was a great opportunity to connect with our senior citizens and discuss important issues, including my free credit report and monitoring bill and our work to expand the property tax relief for disabled veterans. A special thank you to George Kirkwood for organizing this great discussion!

Pottstown Elks Lodge Visit

Honored to speak with the Pottstown Elks Lodge Veterans. It’s crucial to support our service members and veterans. As state Senator, I’ve been working to expand property tax relief for disabled veterans, urge Congress to provide PTSD treatment, honor Korean War veterans, and recognize a bonus for Global War on Terror veterans. I will continue to advocate for those who’ve sacrificed for our country.

New Tool Supports Pennsylvania Veterans

Pennsylvania veterans have a new resource available to them! The Veteran Transition Screener (VTS) is a free, online tool that helps identify potential risks veterans may face and guides veteran-serving providers on how to best support them and their families.

Developed by Penn State’s VETERANetwork team, the VTS is based on data from a long-term study of post-9/11 veterans. This screener is ideal for any program or service provider working with veterans across various areas of life, including employment, education, finances, health, and social connections.

Providers can use the VTS to tailor their services by identifying specific risks or challenges their clients may be experiencing. This information then allows them to develop personalized recommendations that effectively address these needs.

The VTS automatically generates reports with these recommendations, streamlining the process and ultimately improving support for veterans.

To learn more and access a flyer with additional information. For any questions, you can contact the VETERANetwork team at VETERANetwork@psu.edu.

Shooting Ranges Open to the Public

Whether you’re a hunter preparing for rifle season or would simply like to maintain your shooting skills for self-defense, you can take aim at a public shooting range.

The Pennsylvania Game Commission offers recreation opportunities at public rifle, pistol, archery and shotgun ranges on 40 state game lands throughout the state. It constructed or renovated more than a dozen public shooting ranges this year alone, with plans to upgrade more.

You must possess an annual shooting range permit or a current general hunting or furtaker license to use the public shooting ranges. Find a shooting range near you.

Fish and Boat Commission is Accepting Boating Facility Grant Applications

The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) has two grant opportunities for qualifying organizations to capitalize on the surge in new boating activity.

The Boating Facility Grant Program provides grants for planning, acquisition, development, expansion and rehabilitation of public boating facilities on PA waterways. Townships, boroughs and municipal and county governments can learn more and apply online by Nov. 30.

The Recruitment, Retention and Reactivation (R3) Grant Program will reimburse up to $25,000 for eligible expenses that support R3-related educational programs and increase learning opportunities for anglers and boaters. Learn more and apply online by Dec. 6.

Recognizing the Selfless Sacrifice of Veterans

Originally known as Armistice Day, Veterans Day is a time to appreciate the brave men and women who selflessly dedicated their time to preserve our beloved American freedoms.

We also think of their families, who lived with the understanding that their loved ones could be in harm’s way and may not make it home.

These tremendous sacrifices are truly the ultimate demonstration of patriotism.
