Honoring MLK Day of Service at the Code Blue Shelter in PennsburgThis morning, my staff and I spent time at the Code Blue Shelter in Pennsburg as part of MLK Day of Service. Together, we rolled up our sleeves and cleaned the shelter, ensuring it remains a safe and welcoming space for those in need. Serving our community is a meaningful way to honor Dr. King’s legacy and his call to action. If you’d like to support the shelter, you can visit their Amazon Wish List or learn more about their efforts here. Your contributions can make a big difference in the lives of those they serve. Statewide Row Officers Begin Serving PAOn Tuesday, I had the honor of attending the swearing-in ceremonies for PA Treasurer Stacy Garrity, Pennsylvania Auditor General Tim DeFoor, and Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday. I extend my congratulations to Treasurer Garrity and Auditor General DeFoor as they continue their dedicated service to the Commonwealth, and to Attorney General Sunday as he begins his new role. Each of these individuals brings unwavering commitment and leadership to their respective offices, and I am confident their efforts will benefit the citizens of our Commonwealth. Best wishes to all for a successful and impactful term. Highlighting EITC Scholarships During Visit to Saint Francis AcademyThis week, I had the pleasure of visiting Saint Francis Classical Catholic Academy in Bally to see the impact of Pennsylvania’s Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program. This program provides scholarships to help families access high-quality education at schools like Saint Francis. In the 2023-2024 fiscal year, EITC funding increased by $75 million, bringing the program’s total funding to a record $630 million. These scholarships make it possible for low- to middle-income families to choose the best educational opportunities for their children. I am proud to support programs like EITC that give families access to opportunities that help children thrive. Read more here. Support Our Troops: Join the Mission to Make a DifferenceA grassroots initiative based in Lansdale, led by Fred Schempp, USN Master Chief (Ret.), and former Marine Ray Liberto, is calling on the community to join their mission. In collaboration with organizations like ALLY Construction Services, Merck Veterans Leadership Network, USW, HB Frazer, Hatzel & Buehler, US Piping, Radomski Builders, Ten 7 Brewing, Soul Brothers Meats, Cannoneers Club, and countless dedicated volunteers, this effort is making a meaningful difference. The group is collecting and shipping personal care items and supplies to U.S. Navy Seabees serving alongside Marines and Naval Special Warfare personnel at three bases in Southwest Asia. From there, these essential items will be flown to even more remote and challenging locations by C-130 aircraft and helicopters. The initiative also supports U.S. Army troops deployed in the Horn of Africa and is extending assistance to families of displaced service members impacted by the devastating wildfires in California and the hurricane in North Carolina. By joining this effort, you can show these brave men and women—and their families—that they are not forgotten. Together, we can make a real impact. Get involved today and help us continue to bring care and support to those who serve and their loved ones. Assistance Available for Local Historic PreservationThe Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission is now accepting applications from nonprofit organizations and local governments for the Keystone Historic Preservation Grant Program. Applicants may apply for only one type of grant. Learn more and apply online by March 3. Winter Emergency Travel Kit TipsWinter travel can bring extended traffic stops. You can ensure your safety and comfort by packing an emergency travel kit. Be sure to include a blanket, ice scraper, flashlight, warm clothing and gloves, sand, jumper cables, cellphone charger, small shovel, first aid kit, water and nonperishable food. A printable winter emergency kit list from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is available here. Your winter emergency kit should also include the personal items you need to accommodate the family members who travel with you, such as special medication, baby supplies and pet food. January is National Human Trafficking Prevention MonthHuman trafficking often goes hand in hand with violence and social issues. If you suspect someone is being trafficked, call the National Human Trafficking Resource Center Hotline at 1-888-373-7888. Technology, the desire for connection and lack of financial stability all play key roles in the most common ways human trafficking begins. By looking out for those around us, we can help to prevent exploitation before it happens. While the new legislative session just began, Senate Republicans passed multiple bills last session to help people who were victims of human trafficking. One law ensures that sexually exploited children who are human trafficking victims always have full access to appropriate services and support. Another subjects individuals convicted of certain human trafficking offenses to the same reporting and evaluation requirements as any other sexual offender.
