Mobile Office Hours – Locations & Times Dear Friends, As students head back to school, I’m reminded how important it is to support both kids and families. Thanks to everyone who donated to our Back-to-School Drive, your generosity helped ensure local students have the supplies they need to start the school year strong. Attendance is also key to student success. That’s why I’ve introduced Senate Bill 984; a new proposal aimed at helping schools and families tackle truancy. You can read more about it in the article below. Sincerely, In this Update:
Addressing Truancy in Pennsylvania SchoolsIn recent years, Pennsylvania has seen a troubling drop in school attendance, falling from 85% to just 78%. This decline represents more than just missed days in the classroom; it signals an educational crisis with long-term consequences for our students and communities. That’s why I’ve introduced Senate Bill 984, a measure designed to tackle truancy by strengthening accountability for parents, students, and schools, requiring better data-sharing between districts and cyber schools, supporting early intervention services for families, and providing tools for courts to address chronic absenteeism. Every missed day of school means a missed opportunity to learn, grow, and prepare for the future. This bill takes a balanced approach, addressing the root causes of truancy while ensuring schools and families have the resources they need to keep children in the classroom. By working together, we can ensure Pennsylvania students succeed, both now and in the years ahead. Read more here. Fish & Boat Commission Encourages Safe Boating and Fishing Even After Labor DayThere’s still plenty of time to enjoy Pennsylvania’s lakes, rivers, and streams. Cooler temperatures, lighter crowds, and colorful foliage make it one of the best times of year to get outside. The PFBC emphasizes wearing a life jacket while on the water, following Pennsylvania boating laws and regulations, checking weather conditions before heading out, practicing safe boating speeds, being aware of other watercraft, and keeping fishing and boating equipment in good condition. By taking simple precautions, everyone can enjoy Pennsylvania’s waterways safely throughout the season. For more safety information and resources, visit here. As new technology creates new risks, I’ve championed legislation to strengthen protections and hold offenders accountable. We passed SB 1213, now Act 125 of 2024, which criminalizes sexual deepfakes and classifies AI-generated images of minors as child sexual abuse material. This law is already making an impact — earlier this year, the Attorney General announced the first charges under this statute against a York County man. SB 806 strengthens consumer protections by requiring clear disclaimers whenever AI-generated content is used to market goods, while SB 649, now Act 35 of 2025, creates a new offense for harmful deepfakes with stronger penalties when they are used in fraud or theft schemes. We also passed SB 568, which requires social media companies to remove non-consensual intimate images within 48 hours of a report. These efforts ensure Pennsylvania is leading the way in tackling the challenges of AI while safeguarding children, consumers, and our democracy. Eliminating Waste and Fraud in State GovernmentReforming the way state government operates includes removing barriers to creating good jobs and preventing fraud and waste of taxpayer dollars. This year, we passed legislation to implement stricter oversight to block regulations that will cost employers or taxpayers more than $1 million, and require automatic review of these kinds of regulations after three years to ensure they remain in the public interest. Other bills passed by the Senate require the Department of Human Services to prevent fraud in public assistance, prevent dead people from receiving benefits and ensure unemployment compensation benefits don’t go to claimants who try to avoid work. To reduce the risk of data breaches in taxpayer-funded systems, we passed legislation requiring all state IT contracts to meet national cybersecurity standards. You can review all the notable bills we’ve passed in 2025 here.
