Senate Passes the Save Women’s Sports Act

HARRISBURG – With a bipartisan vote, the Senate approved legislation Tuesday co-sponsored by Sen. Tracy Pennycuick (R-24) to protect athletic opportunity, competitive fairness and safety for female athletes across Pennsylvania.

Senate Bill 9, the Save Women’s Sports Act, would ensure athletic teams designated for girls and women are reserved for biological females in K-12 and collegiate sports across the commonwealth.

“This is solely about fairness and opportunity,” Pennycuick said. “I believe that by maintaining separate, sex-specific teams, we can protect athletic opportunities for women while upholding the intent of Title IX.”

Pennycuick noted that Title IX was established to eliminate discrimination and ensure equal access to sports for female athletes. Unfortunately, when a biological male replaces a female athlete, that individual is denied the right to equal participation as guaranteed under Title IX.

“As an athlete in my youth, and the mother of girls who competed in sports, I know the wonderful lessons learned from competing in women athletics such as leadership, grit, graciousness in winning and humility in losing,” Pennycuick said. “Let’s keep a level playing field for girls and women who compete in sports and ensure a fair opportunity for these terrific athletes.”

Senate Bill 9 was sent to the House of Representatives for consideration.
