Sen. Pennycuick Kicks Off Breast Cancer Awareness Month with Area YMCA’s to Inform Residents about the Importance of Early Detection and Treatment

Red Hill, PA – Today, Pennsylvania Senator Tracy Pennycuick (24th District) launched a month-long public awareness campaign partnering with the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition (PABCA) and regional YMCAs to raise awareness and share information about prevention, early detection, and treatment options for this very challenging diagnosis.

Approximately, 1 in 8 women in the United States will get breast cancer in their lifetime, but if found and treated early most women can survive to live long and full lives. Breast cancer is one of the most common kinds of cancer in women. A mammogram can diagnose the disease early when it is most beatable.

Area YMCAs will have information tables set up in the lobby with free brochures and items for residents. You do not have to be a member of the YMCA to get information from the designated tables.

“We’re encouraging all Pennsylvanians to take a look at their risk of developing hereditary cancers like breast cancer,” said Sen. Pennycuick. “High-risk factors can include family history of breast cancer, dense breast tissue, and BRCA1 or BRCA2 genetic mutation. I encourage anyone with any questions or concerns to visit the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition website for very helpful information about such issues as where to get a mammogram, how to get a ride to treatment, what to do if you don’t have insurance and information about paying for prescription medicines, and so much more.

Act 1 of 2023 passed by the Pennsylvania legislature provides no-cost breast MRI, ultrasound, genetic testing, and genetic counseling for individuals insured under state law.
