Pennycuick Announces Awards for Projects in Berks County

HARRISBURG – Sen. Tracy Pennycuick (R-24) today announced three grants she helped secure for projects in Berks County.

The grants were awarded through the Commonwealth Financing Authority’s Local Share Account Category 4 Program, which uses revenue generated by casinos to fund projects that improve quality of life for the general public.

“Public safety and stormwater management are two components of healthy, thriving communities, but they come with hefty price tags,” Pennycuick said. “I’m very happy to help secure these funds for Berks County and Hereford and Washington Townships. These grants will allow our communities to invest in the projects and equipment they need most.”

Berks County will receive $150,000 for the purchase and upfitting of a crime scene response vehicle for use throughout the county. The current vehicle has surpassed its expected lifespan and requires frequent repairs. The new vehicle will improve county investigators’ ability to respond to incidents across the region.

Hereford Township will receive $92,000 for the replacement of an undersized culvert and associated drainage improvements. The project will replace the existing 36-inch boiler pipe culvert under Camp Mensch Mill Road near the intersection with Conrad Road. The improvements will help prevent flooding, protect the stream channel and support a downstream streambank stabilization project being designed.

Washington Township will receive $26,165 for the purchase and installation of nine surveillance cameras at several of its facilities. The Township identified a need for increased security features in response to instances of illegal activities occurring at its properties and parks. The new cameras will help to deter vandalism, destruction of property, illegal parking, etc. and ensure these spaces remain safe and secure.

The Commonwealth Financing Authority (CFA) was established in 2004 as an independent agency to administer Pennsylvania’s economic stimulus packages. The CFA holds fiduciary responsibility over the funding of programs and investments in Pennsylvania’s economic growth.
